Online survey on test effort estimation

The last couple of months, we have done a lot of research about test effort estimation and test exit criteria. We know from our industrial experience how important a good test effort estimation is for planning resources, schedules and risks. Unfortunately the effort is often estimated by rule of thumb. Budget and time overruns are the result. We have the same experienced regarding test exit criteria. Often it is difficult to negotiate about finishing the test because processes or general metrics don’t exist.

For MBT, test effort estimation and exit criteria are just as important, but sometimes their main factors differ: Test efforts are often underestimated by underrating the large cost for implementing the necessary test adapters, due to MBT’s focus being on the models. Exit criteria, especially coverage criteria on the features and models, are heavily used to decide how many and which test cases to generate. Thus exit criteria are even more important for MBT and should be chosen wisely.

We are developing new methods for test effort estimation and test exit criteria for the general case, i.e. not with the focus on MBT. Now, we want to ask for your support. We perform a study with test experts as online survey at http://umfrage.qs-welt.de/index.php/454837/lang-de. Please take 30 minutes for answering the survey, because a good response rate is the foundation for further research! The survey is only available in German. If you don’t speak German, perhaps you could nevertheless answer the survey by using the browser translate function.

Thank you for supporting us and best wishes

Thanks for the blog post and survey.

I’ve participated and believe the questions are quite important to think about. For research and in your own company!

You can also print out your answers at the end, so you have a catalog of questions you can consult time and again – very useful.
